Dr. Itzel Calleja-Macias

Assistant Professor of Biology

Dr. Calleja-Macias is an Assistant Professor of Biology specializing in Biological Sciences and Molecular Biology.  She has an MA from the University of Veracruz, Mexico and a PhD from the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, Mexico.  Dr. Macias Master’s degree focused on studying chromosome Y- linked male infertility. When she started her PhD she was offered to work at UC Irvine under the mentorship of Luis Villarreal and Hans Urlich Bernard, two international scientific authorities in the field of the human papilloma virus and its link to cervical cancer. She obtained her PhD in 2004 and continued working at UCI researching the epigenetic factors involved in the spread of HPV for the next 8 years. After a brief time working at the private sector in a company specialized in molecular diagnostics, she returned to the academic field and currently teaches in the Department of Biological Sciences at Vanguard University where she is also the Director of the Jesse Miranda Center. She is a member of the Mexican research society  Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI), she has been awarded three fellowships by Mexican Council of Science and Technology (CONACyT) and research prizes in Mexico.
